Quote from the Official Standard

"Alert, bold, loyal, dependable, courageous, fierce in appearance, but possessed of an affectionate nature."

The Bulldog was originally used to catch a bull by the nose and hold him down. His body shape gave him leverage and the agility to sway as the bull tossed him from side to side. The folds of skin around his neck protected him and kept the blood out of his eyes. The short, wide nose allowed him to breathe as he hung on. Short legs gave him a sturdy stance, enabling him to get in beneath the bull's horns.

Bulldogs were traditionally used in bull baiting contests, but they did not usually fight with other dogs, they have always been very loyal, no matter how badly mistreated. The fighting instinct was gradually bred out, leaving loyalty, tenacity and courage.
